SRC Speech Recognition solution provides high-quality accuracy to speed up reporting times
The Radiology department at Homerton University Hospital
NHS Trust has installed the SRC Speech Recognition solution. The system has streamlined the X-ray reporting process, increased efficiency, reduced costs and improved turnaround times considerably.
Background
Homerton is based in the East London borough of Hackney.
They provide general hospital services to Hackney and the City of London and specialist care in obstetrics, neonatology, fetal medicine, laparoscopic surgery, fertility, bariatric surgery, obesity surgery and neurorehabilitation across east London and beyond. They were one of the first 10 NHS foundation trusts in England.
Business Opportunity
Speech Recognition is a proven technology within the healthcare market and its ability to speed up document turnaround times with amazing accuracy levels were key deciders when Homerton Hospitals Radiology department where looking to replace their tape based system.
Barry Cotton from Homerton Hospital explains the key objectives: “When we started to investigate speech recognition we were looking for a solution that could improve Radiology turnaround times from 5 plus days to 24-48 hours, improve the accuracy of reports, reduce clinical risk and building on proven benefits of ‘Hot Reporting’.”
Although achieving objectives is a key part of any project so are the business drivers as Barry Cotton says: “The project forms a central part of our financial recovery plan to maintain foundation status. The Speech Recognition was an affordable technology that could provide savings with minimal integration issues and would enable us to capitalise on EPR and PACS investments.”
Results
To date the results have been impressive for the Trust as Barry Cotton explains: “The project has gone well and staff are enthusiastic, with over 80% of reports now done using Speech Recognition. Speech Recognition achieves at least 96% accuracy levels across the department and speeds up reporting times and is a marked improvement for all areas.”
