SRC provides digital dictation and speech recognition solutions to The Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust – Histopathology department

London, 27 July 2007 - The Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust has awarded SRC, the UK’s leading provider of document creation technologies, the contract to deploy the leading edge WinScribe digital dictation and Nuance speech recognition systems throughout the Histopathology department at Hammersmith Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. The new solutions will help reduce labour intensive processes by automating and streamlining the way that doctors/consultants capture, manage and create documents.

The WinScribe digital dictation system, to be installed across both Hospital sites by SRC, has been specifically tailored for the Histopathology department to provide a hands-free method for doctors/consultants to dictate using wireless headsets and pneumatic foot pedals in cut up rooms.

The new solution from SRC will help improve productivity and reporting turnaround times. As Dr Nick Francis, Consultant Pathologist at Hammersmith Hospital explains: “We felt workplace and process efficiency could be improved by replacing the existing tape based and hand written methods of dictation. Currently Doctors or technical staff need an assistant to take notes during cut up, or dictate onto conventional tape that needs to be physically handed to the appropriate typing resource. The SRC solution provides a streamlined means for our Pathologists to dictate whilst working and automatically prioritising and instantly sending dictations for transcription.

In addition, the increasing volume of dictations that needed to be typed was putting increased pressure on secretaries. The ability to produce documents quickly and against tight deadlines is fundamental to our ability to deliver better healthcare to the London communities we serve. With the speech recognition software we can create professional documents within minutes, which provides a significant time saving for us.”

As part of the deployment SRC will also provide a Dragon Speech Recognition solution to the Trust. We demonstrated that it would integrate into the Misys Copath Laboratory Information System and further improve reporting turnaround times. The speech recognition solution will now be rolled out to over 25 consultants at the Trust.

Chris Hart, CEO at SRC said: “We are pleased to be working with Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals to deliver a solution incorporating both digital dictation and speech recognition technologies, which we are confident will deliver significant efficiencies and improved working practices. This project affirms SRC’s ability to offer tailored solutions that integrate with the various hospital information applications where required and which are capable of exceeding demanding NHS Trust requirements.”
