Dictation and transcription hardware

A key advantage of the digital dictation solution provided by SRC is the number of different input devices that can be used by authors to dictate work.

In this section we highlight a number of the more commonly used input devices used for dictating, namely:

Desktop dictation

For authors working at their PC or laptop, hardwired dictation devices are an easy-to-use option. The most popular of these devices are the Philips SpeechMike devices. Olympus also have a good range of desktop dictation devices.

Two Philips SpeechMike options are typically used, one with a slider switch and rollerball (pictured opposite), and one with buttons and a rollerball.

Portable dictation

These dictation devices can be used either connected directly to a PC (as a microphone) or as a mobile recorder for those authors working away from their PC or laptop. Philips and Olympus make some of the most popular devices, with the latter being the market leader for handheld digital recorders in the UK.

These devices can be easily configured to store job types and author IDs so that after dictation the author simply connects the devices to a PC for synchronisation with the digital dictation system for automatic prioritisation and distribution for transcription.

The Olympus DS-5000 (pictured opposite) and Philips DPM9600 portable dictation devices have a host of sophisticated features and slider control switch, which works in the same ways as an analogue tape device, making adoption simple.

The Olympus DS-5000 and Philips DPM 9600, allows a barcode reader to be atached in order to capture patient details or other coded data as part of the dictation.

The solution SRC implement was the first dictation system to introduce dictation via the telephone. The system allows authors to securely create dictations 24 hours a day using the telephone. Whilst dictating the keypad is used to record, playback, rewind, fast-forard and submit dictations.

Once submitted dictations are automatically allocated to the correct secretary or secretarial team for typing. The system is extremely versatile and can also be used for archiving dictations.

Blackberry dictation

WinScribe, the digital dictation system SRC deploy) is leading the way with innovative Blackberry dictation solutions thanks to its unique partnership with Research In Motion (RIM).

This market leading solution enables you to securely dictate using your Blackberry. You can now use your Blackberry to record, playback and edit recordings, select job types, input additional fields, such as matter numbers, and upload dictations. Users also have the ability to insert and overwrite audio dictation captured on their Blackberry Smartphones.

Once your dictation is recorded you can, using the highest level of security, wirelessly upload it onto the WinScribe system for intelligent workflow distribution and immediate routing to secretaries for transcription.

Web uploader

Although not an input device, the web uploader adds significant flexibility for authors working remotely. By accessing a secure webpage from any PC with Internet access and a web browser, authors can upload their dictations directly to the dictation system.

The application requires no software to install on the user's PC, making IT support and maintenance hassle-free.

Web uploader enables authors to record dictations, on a portable digital device and then upload the audio file from any PC to the digital dictation system.
