SRC’s speech recognition solution set to reduce reporting times at Newham University Hospital

London, 5 February 2009 - SRC, the leading provider of digital dictation and speech recognition to NHS Trusts, has been selected to deploy speech recognition to the Radiology department at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUHT). The solution enables Radiologists, Sonographers and Reporting Radiographers to create documents and reports directly from voice commands and spoken words, rather than using the current time-consuming method of self-typing.

Barry Cotton, Business Manager at NUHT, who instigated the speech recognition project said: “Our intention is to build on our excellent improvements in access to diagnostic imaging at Newham and enable radiologists to create documents in the most economic and efficient way. SRC’s solution will enable them to produce reports faster than at present and be totally self-reliant, removing the need for the final approval stage of the reporting process. This will in turn lead to an improvement in the timeliness of clinical decision making in line with the 18 week targets and the delivery of higher quality services to patients.”

The solution, which is based on Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 10, the world’s leading speech recognition system, will be installed, trained and supported by SRC. Whilst the training provided by SRC will ensure users are adept at using the solution, medical vocabularies included with the solution will also ensure an immediately high level of recognition accuracy. SRC will provide users with specialist noise-cancelling microphones to further enhance accuracy levels.

Barry Cotton added: “The solution offered by SRC maximises the benefits for users and provides NUHT with genuine efficiency savings. SRC’s proven experience and their ability to provide a cost-effective and appropriate solution made them the right choice for the hospital.”

Chris Hart, CEO at SRC said: “We pride ourselves on delivering a complete range of reliable and flexible document creation solutions that drive efficiencies and cost savings on a Directorate as well as a Trust wide basis. We look forward to working with NUHT and helping them to substantially reduce document creation times.”

As well as providing Speech Recognition solutions to a number of Radiology and Pathology departments, for example Imperial College Healthcare and Homerton University Hospital, SRC also provides digital dictation solutions to numerous NHS Trusts. Recent Trust wide deployments include; Ealing Hospital, Chesterfield Royal, Taunton and Somerset, Brighton and Sussex, Darent Valley Hospital, the Dudley Group of Hospitals and Royal West Sussex.
